A correlation tells you two things move together. It does not tell you which one moves the other, or whether something else is moving both.
Your syllabus calls that third thing a confounder. You will also meet it as a lurking variable, which is the same idea under a different name.
Understanding check
A study finds that students who eat breakfast get better grades. Can the school raise grades by serving breakfast?
“Yes. Breakfast causes better grades, so serving it should raise them.”
Right instinct, wrong conclusion. The study only shows the two go together. Students who eat breakfast may also sleep more, live in steadier homes, or get to school on time, and any of those could be lifting the grades. To show breakfast is the cause, you would serve it to a randomly chosen group and compare.

Main gap: who writes the check does not decide who bears the cost. The burden falls on whichever side of the market is less elastic.
Why structure
AI helps most when it teaches rather than simply answers.
A randomized controlled study tested an AI tutor built around active learning, scaffolding and targeted feedback. It produced larger learning gains than an in-class active-learning session on the same material.

Both figures are results from Kestin et al., 2025, an independent study of a different AI tutoring system in introductory physics. They are not ClassDay results, and ClassDay has not been academically validated to produce them.
